Can AI Write Your Wedding Vows?

Cynthia Capaccio

The short answer, where AI really helps with wedding planning, and where it falls flat. From a South Florida ceremony writer since 2012.

Yes, AI can write wedding vows. It can turn out something lovely in a few seconds. The problem is that it doesn’t know you, so the vows come out sounding like everyone else’s. Guests can usually tell. If you want vows that sound like the two of you, they need to come from your real story.

Where AI helps with wedding planning

More couples are using AI to plan their weddings, and for a lot of it, I say go for it. It’s great for:

•      Researching venues and vendors

•      Building budgets and guest lists

•      Rewriting emails to your vendors

•      Brainstorming when you’re stuck

Use the tools that make your life easier.

Where AI falls flat: your vows

AI pulls from the words that show up in every beautiful vow ever written. That’s exactly why AI vows start to sound alike. Even with careful prompting, it only knows what you tell it, and therein lies the biggest problem: most people don’t know what to tell it.

AI doesn’t know that the two of you laugh at your own jokes before you finish telling them. It doesn’t know you fell for each other over a burnt pot of coffee at 2 a.m. It doesn’t know your wedding bands were designed with family heirlooms that make them more precious than the metal itself.

Those are the details that make your guests laugh and reach for tissues. They’re also the details AI can’t make up.

I tested it, and here’s what AI wrote

I asked Google’s AI to write my wedding vows. I have to admit, it did a nice job. It has come a long way. Here’s a taste:

“From this moment on, I choose you to be my partner in life and my greatest joy... I promise to listen to you with an open heart, to support your dreams, and to choose you every single day, over and over again.”

Lovely, right? Now read it again. It could be about anyone.

I’ve also proofread plenty of vows that couples wrote with AI, and the same lines show up again and again: “grounded and deeply”  The words are beautiful, but they’re stripped of human identity.

Then the AI asked me to tell it more, so it could make the vows uniquely mine. It asked for my partner’s name and the tone I’d prefer. A name and a tone. That’s it. It can only work with what you think to tell it, and it still writes in its own voice, not yours.

Your vows should sound like the way you talk

My husband, for example, would never in his life say “I vow to cultivate” or “a sanctuary of warmth and security.” Plenty of people wouldn’t. Not everyone is comfortable with big, flowery phrases like that. If they stood up and read those AI vows, everyone in the room would know the words weren’t theirs.

My questionnaire is designed to help me get to know you as a person and the two of you as a couple. It shows me how you talk, what makes you laugh, and what you’d never say in a million years. Then I write vows with your personality in mind, whether you’re a natural poet or a person of very few words. Short and plain can be every bit as moving, as long as it’s true.

How I write vows instead

I never start with a fill-in-the-blank template. Every vow and every ceremony I write starts with your story. Each of you answers my private questionnaire, and then I take what you share, in your own words, and shape it into something you’ll be proud to say out loud on the best day of your life.

That questionnaire is the part AI can’t ever replace. It draws out the memories and feelings people don’t think to mention on their own.

Don’t leave the most important words you’ve ever spoken up to chance. You can hire me to write your vows even if someone else is officiating. I write ceremonies, speeches, and vows for people all over the world.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use AI to help write my wedding vows?

You can use it to brainstorm or check your grammar. Just don’t let it write the vows for you. Start with your own memories, so the words sound like you.

Can people tell if wedding vows were written by AI?

Often, yes. AI vows tend to repeat the same phrases and rhythm, and they’re missing the specific details only the two of you know.

Can I hire someone to write my wedding vows?

Yes. I write vows as a standalone service for couples anywhere in the world, whether or not I’m your officiant.
